I know we are already a week into June & this should be up already but I fail sometimes, usually most times with timing! As for my favourites I’ve really been loving hair products this month which features heavily in this post. Funnily enough except for one product its mainly drugstore buys which have piqued my interest the most in the month of may.
I’ve been on a bit of a crazy train lately, having tried almost all the foundations I thought would be great for Spring & Summer as well as the up & coming wedding bells nearer to the end of the year. Well by what’s above it’s all seems like a great waste of time because I’ve gone back to old favourites but applied them in a better way. This is perfect for those warm Spring days & eventually hot Summer days as well as it lasting as long as you can.
I feel like all my inspiration for my Autumn/Winter make-up has come from this one photo above ( from November’s Allure magazine I think…). I’ve been all about the bronze, copper metallic eye & eyeliner just finishes it for me. Not so much of the metallic lips I just can’t pull that one-off, I’ll leave that one for the experts. When it comes to eyeliner I’m a novice. I want it to be easy to the point where I’m not crying for 30 minutes about wonky lines, smudges or simply gunk free inner eyes where my liner has accumulated. I really don’t ask for much do I? Well I decided I’d try the Urban Decay 24 7 Eye Pencil, a little less affordable and a hell of a lot more hyped than most eyeliners.
Urban Decay 24 7 Eye pencil in Naked
This was taken a few weeks back when sunlight was still available most of the day! It was the last time I managed curling my hair with Ghds, not sure what changed but I’ve tried twice since & had to go back over & straighten it. Maybe need new hair products but it’s bugging me, would love any tips you got on it.
Back to the eyeliner at hand, I got the doubled ended Naked one (meant to go with the infamous Naked palette) so I had more colour to play around with for the same price as one. The shades are Zero a soft black & Whiskey a warm medium brown. For most eyeliner wears this pretty much covers you for your eyeliner needs. I haven’t attempted to fail at the dreaded wing yet but for extra definition at the base of my lashes this baby works. It’s creamy formula glides along your lash line & you can get colour right at the root of the lashes. If find Whiskey to be more pigmented but you can build up Zero to be a more opaque black. If you apply this to your water line make sure it’s really dry before you apply it as this means it last most of the day without migrating into the inner eye.
I will definitely be getting more of these eyeliners in the future as I really fancy trying out the velvet version. The Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Pencil lives up to the hype and then some. Yes they are £12 for the doubled ended (2 x 0.5g) but I think compared with all the eyeliners I’ve bought it’s still better value as I trust that I can pick this up any time and not fail at it! The singles are more expensive but better value at £14-£15 but you get 2g of product.
What’s your favourite Urban Decay colour or do you have a better eyeliner to beat it?
When it comes to time management when I’m getting ready I fail every time. I’ve cut out a lot of time by washing my hair the night before this means the last bit can be quickly blown dry. When it comes to my Ghds I think for me time stops, “let’s not burn your fingers or ears this time”, ” where’s that hair clip gone?” and ” did I use heat protector on that section?” all run through my head. I forget about everything else and time disappears. Reality kicks back in and were meant to leave in like 20 minutes or we’ll miss the bus that gives 10 minutes left for makeup and the other to run around & work out what I’m wearing.
When my brain eventually panics I reach for my trusted makeup choices. I seem to have built this up around more expensive makeup but it’s just the things I know work or I can apply quickly. We all have different skin types and shades so steps could easily be swapped out for the pieces that work best for you.
10 Minutes Left – The Go To Kit
I just can’t get away without using one my gigantic pores need some form of filler to hide them at least from my sight. In I go with my long time friend my Benefit Porefessional. This is a complete love hate relationship as it’s fine with the foundation below but liquids can go either way. Few get along with this but I have a feeling it maybe me not giving it time to set? Any thoughts on this one let me know how you get on with it?
For speed and a nice smooth coverage I reach for my Mac Studio Fix powder foundation. I can apply it with my blush brush all over & go back in where I need more coverage. If I’m not having a spotty phase then I’ll go without concealer but if I did I apply it first before the powder. I like that it’s light enough in shade and finely milled so it suits me great.
Set Your Powder
This may seem like extra work to something you’ve already applied but this helps to keep your makeup on your face for longer. It also removes that powder finish making it look more natural. My setting spray of choice is Urban Decays All Nighter. To speed this process up spray onto a large powder brush and pat across the face. It will dry faster this way rather that doing the four direct sprays. That’s because I hate getting that taste on my lips and having to wait 10 minutes just for it to dry.
I don’t do contouring or bronzing not yet anyway. I do know however that you have to add colour back into the face or you’ll look 2D or zombie-fied! My Clinique All Over Colour in Poppy Plum Blend is just right for my talent level (zero). It has a shimmer that translates to a sheen where it becomes highlighter & blusher in one. This saves time and I always follow it with a little more setting spray.
For this I used a light base shade all over then went in with a contour colour for depth. This month it’s been a half filled 4 Mac palette using Blanc Type (base) & Cork (contour). Love Blanc Type but in need of a deeper shade than Cork (suggestions?). I had to include the Mac 217 brush as it’s what I’ve used every time & it hasn’t failed me yet. I also did my brows with Macs brow pencil in Lingering this was purely picked up because it’s super speedy. I’m still not convinced it’s the right shade for me. It think the girl at Mac thought I was gonna sharpie my brows in and suggested the lighter shade option! On to mascara and for speeds sake I went for the 2true volume over the Revlon 3D PhotoReady mascara. For some reason its less work and hassle with the 2true, the same spiky plastic wand but easier to use. One coat and I have super black lashes.
I did a basic eye look at a more budget friendly price which is basically a dupe for the above here. Both work well but my Mac set is me building together a palette for traveling with that’s compact.
When I’m lacking on time I always forget about my lips until the last second purely because I find it something hardest to get right. If I’m not happy with what I’ve chosen I’ll be unhappy with it all day. I usually go for the Nyc Applicious Glossy Balm as it covers colour and fixed dry lips. I think these are being discontinued so my alternative that’s very similar is the Carmex Moisture Plus in Berry. It’s the only one with a decent amount of colour to it in the range. I love how compact it is so I can top up through the day.
When you have 10 minutes left to do your makeup
what are the things your reach for first?
I can handle warm days but July has been one hell of a hot month. As soon as I wrote the title I had that Nelly song stuck in my head, at least it’s apt. It also makes me feel super old when I realised (checked Wikipedia) that it was 12 years ago!
Rarely do I show anything beyond beauty bits in my favourites but I had to share this one..
These are my new Vans Sunglasses and the were picked up a fortnight ago on what was the wettest weekend of the entire month. However when the sun did shine it was a great relief to have these at hand. At just £7 in the sales it was a bargain that I’ve made use of multiple times. July was hot but this quirky & rather vibrant for me sunnies saved the day.
July Beauty Faves
Loreal True Match Foundation 30 ml £9.99
I had a rocky start with this one and it was pushed aside until I found a perfect pairing (here) that made application and final appearance the perfect pale summer base. It’s a light to medium coverage but I like that it allows your skin to breathe & sweat. This sounds wrong but this means that with blotting paper I can remove the glisten from my face without taking away the foundation as well.
Mac Studio Fix Plus Foundation 15g £21.50
Yes a second foundation in my favourites and we all here less is more for summer makeup but this works. I can use it as a touch up for the above mentioned or on super lazy days all over. It doesn’t get cakey but hold the coverage rather well.
Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray 30 ml £9
I long loved setting spray that has lasted me a really long time to say it’s only the travel size. I use this every time I do my makeup as it adds a little extra wear time but also softens out any powder products. It’s almost like a soft focus for your face when you use it onto of makeup. I always apply this by spraying it into a brush and applying in a patting motion.
Clinique All About Lips 12 ml £19
A recent within the last month purchase that has just boosted my love for wearing lipstick. I always try to prep my lips before lipstick but if I forget this means no one else has to know. It is a cream you put on your lips and around your lips and it just smooths the skin out. It’s not cheap but it’s a must have.
Garnier Ultimate Blends Conditioner 400 ml £3.89
As always conditioner is bought on a whim for me as and when needed. This one smells really gorgeous so I went with it and I’m glad I did. I only apply this to the length of my hair as it’s a rich conditioner. You don’t even have to leave it on long I can feel my hairs softer even as I wash it off. It might not be a forever thing but that’s the second bottle I’ve bought which is a good sign.
P.s All links are to where I’ve bought them from unless a link isn’t available.
