I wasn’t sure what to post with it being January 1st but I decided a good place is to start as you mean to go on. For me that’s means getting a good skin care routine together that will make a difference. For most of last year I’ve heard about glycolic acid & the good it can do but often they’re so expensive. I’m talking about you Ren Glycolactic Radiance Mask, I just can’t spend £30 for 30ml even if everybody else swears by you.
I really do love face masks, it’s my favourite way to treat my skin. It also forces me to stop & simply relax, I can’t stop my brain doing overtime but at least my body can at the end of my work day. I had searched out some budget skin care & I’ve gone past these Superdrug ones often I decided it was time to give them a chance.
Superberry Mud Mask
This Exfoliating Mud Mask contains antioxidant rich Superberry Extract to help protect the skin from free radicals, while China Clay absorbs excess oil and Raspberry Seeds gently exfoliate, revealing smooth, glowing skin. Dermatologically approved. – Superdrug
My first impressions of this mask were that it smells really nice & the tube is easy to squeeze the mask out of. It’s a pale pink shade & has seeds in it to exfoliate with, a bit of a 2 in 1 scrub & mask. It’s quick to apply and sticks to the face so no bit’s falling off half way through. When I first used it I didn’t read the instructions & just did it in the bath after I’d cleansed my face while it was still wet. I don’t know if it was the bath that was too hot or I’d simply over scrubbed with the beads but it didn’t look good. Wherever I had applied the mask my face was bright red. This lasted for most of the night but I could see it calming down & my skin was fine by the next morning. Below are the recommendations from Superdrug that I read after the fact.
Warnings or Restrictions
Use only as directed. Avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water. Test for irritancy first. Do not apply to broken, damaged or sensitive skin. Discontinue use if irritation develops. For external use only, not for consumption
What I wanted to show is it’s always best to test a face mask even on your arm before you apply it to your face. This is the first face mask that I’ve had any kind of reaction to which is why it’s so strange. This may not happen to everybody but you just never know. What I’m wondering is if Superdrug think that making my face red in this way counts as radiance. I sure as hell was glad I didn’t have to leave the house looking like a raspberry! The funny thing is this is the second radiance product from Superdrug I didn’t like, the first was the Radiance Eye Cream. Not everything from the range is unloved I do like the Balm Cleanser.
Superberry Done To The Instructions
Even though I reacted to this badly the first time I decided to give it one more chance. I followed the instructions, apply it to my cleansed but dry face then left it for 10 – 15 minutes (10 minutes!). As you can see below I didn’t react as bad but there’s still a fair bit of redness. You can see the white panda eyes & my hair-line where the product didn’t touch. I think a big part of the problem is the raspberry seed which are way too rough to be helpful. It feels like it’s scratching at your skin and not giving a refined complexion what so ever.
Even I’ve Learnt Something New
I’m not saying all the Superdrug masks are like this one as I also picked up the moisture mask & have enjoyed using it. I just wanted to give a warning that if you’re buying a new face mask, any brand or type to give it a trial. I was lucky that I wasn’t going anywhere after it but could you imagine if you had to then try covering it up. If you do react to a face mask, cleanse your skin with something gentle then apply a decent face moisturiser. I did this a few times on the night it was bad and I think it helped the most.
Where Is My Mind #4
So I’ve been absent on my blog recently which feels odd but I just needed some rest. It’s not the only thing but definitely a major reason, the other is my health. I’m wrapping my head around the idea of actually getting healthy. A big part of this is my decision to stop taking tablets for acid reflux. Instead I’m trying to change what I eat by avoiding anything that causes it. Along with this on Friday I’m setting myself back on Pro Points & hopefully I’ll last longer this time round.
I’ve restarted old projects from a few years back. This includes a crochet blanket I started & a pair of gloves that I only managed to get one made! I’ve promised my fella I’ll get the other one done as there for him & his BFG sized big hands.
Pre-Saving For Xmas Haul
In trying to take better care of my skin I bought not just one but four face masks. All very budget friendly Superdrug own brand pieces. Three are to tackle radiance including a glycolic peel & the other is a moisture mask. What I will say is one of them turned me tomatoes red afterwards! This was not pretty but I’m giving it a second chance if it was something else. I’ll post soon about this one as I completely freaked when it happened. It did subside by the next morning but it’s made me a little overly cautious.
I cannot tell you how much I love shopping here for beauty buys. What I will say is head down if you’re looking for Xmas presents as they had Philosophy minis at £4.99 from last year & the bath foams for £7.99.
I’ve needed a new spot treatment for a few weeks now as my Origins Super Spot Remover has barely any left in it. I picked up Murads Blemish Spot Treatment worth £19 for £5 as the box was damaged, score! I picked up a three pack of Mavala nail minis for £7.99 the shades cover Autumn perfectly with a Xmas red but initially intrested in by the shade Black Cherry. Last but not least T.K.Maxx have randomly got Phicians Formula in stock. Only a few pieces but enough to peak my interest seen as it’s an American only brand. I picked up the mineral wear powder brush for £3.99 which I have no idea if that’s good or not but I have a specific purpose in mind. OK, one more thing but this isn’t even mine it’s my fellas. This is the second tube of this hand cream he’s bought so it’s a good sign he likes it. That and it doesn’t have much fragrance to it which is his preference.
I know I’m technically an adult & I shouldn’t be all crazy for Halloween & Xmas but I really am. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a long time obsession that will always have a place in my heart. Every year around Halloween we make a trip to the Disney store. It’s the only time that the range is in store even the Christmas bits which always seems daft to me. This time we got two Jack head shaped plates & a new ornament for our tree. There was a bauble set but we already have two & will be needing a bigger Xmas tree if we get many more! I’m actually thinking of getting one in the sale so we have one for our bedroom and front room, any excuse to buy more decorations.
Oh how I do love Lush, that and any excuse to show how much I like men with beards. Obviously not as much as my own fella but I’ve already told him I’m gonna try at some point to copy that photo. Lush have done this to celebrate the new Kalamazoo a beard and facial wash, which I know we will end up getting soon. What I actually bought was Let The Good Times Roll which I’ve bought and loved before. This is likely to be a permanent Christmas purchase, it smells amazing. I think they’ve done away with the big pieces of popcorn in it which to be honest were really annoying. I also got a sample size piece of Reindeer Rock which I will be using soon as it smells really nice.
I’m slowing getting more comfortable with a more complex routine again. I’m not quite fully there but by winter I’ll probably be yearning to finally add a serum into the mix.I’ve got blemish prone skin that leans on the dry side more than often especially as it gets colder. I’ve managed to bring in some more mid range items without spending the cash to do so. T.K.Maxx has got some amazing bargains with skin care as little as a 1/3 of the RRP.
Evening Skin Care
A few cleansers are in rotation at night for different uses, depending on what follows. First is the Murad Aha/Bha Exfoliating Cleanser. This has jojoba beads that give manual exfoliation while multiple acids get to work. I picked this up for £12.99 (originally it’s £35). I only use about a 10p size amount as that’s all you need. I wet my face to give it enough slip on the skin to give it a decent scrub. This could be too much for sensitive skin as it feels a little scratchy but much less abrasive than most manual scrubs.
If I’m going to have a bath I use the Superdrug Brightening Balm cleanser. This is great for calming everything down at the end of a hard day. I apply it to dry skin taking my time to massage it in. The brightening side is lost on me obviously using it at night defies that point. This is just an affordable cleanse that I like to use before I apply a face mask and attempt to relax.
Occasionally if my skin is playing up or I just want a sensitive cleanser I go for the Perricone M.D Gentle cleanser. I won’t go into detail as I recently reviewed it on its own here.
This will become a twosome soon as I have my eye on an affordable hydrating toner. For now I’ve got a Christian Bretton (éclat – Jeunesse) Aha Toner that’s alcohol free. This is a recent addition so I can’t say too much yet. It does feel comfortable which I always though all acid toner would be harsh but I’ve not reacted. If I use the Murad cleanser I don’t use the toner & vice versa so I don’t over do it too much.
Back on rotation my Origins On The spot treatment is getting used often. Some annoying spots on my chin I’m finding hard to fix are slowly dying down. I went off this but when I need help this does the job. Can be drying with repeated use but I’m adding other thing in to combat that side effect.
I’ve just got one on the go compared with the Simple duo I previously used. It’s the B. Energised eye cream that’s more of a thick gel texture. If like me you get those gorgeous sexy dry patches that mess your eye makeup then this is a good one. This gives me longer lasting hydration that the Simple balm which I’m prefer. If you have tired eyes then go with something different maybe one with a metal roller ball. I’m not finding the piece that is the B.Energised side of the product.
Another new addition is my Yes to Carrots Night Cream for normal to dry skin. It’s fragrance free & 96% natural ingredients . It’s a great mid range drugstore brand that’s recently ( last few months ) made its way into Boots. This has carrot (duh!) & avocado to hydrate your skin and I agree it does the job well. It’s a light texture that sinks in easily.
Night Time Mask
Untill I work out what I want in a serum I’ve gone with keeping my skin hydrated. Another new part in my routine is the Sampar So Much To Dew Midnight mask. Another T.K.Maxx find at just £9.99 this is £34 normally. At that price it’s a steel I’m able to use more expensive skin care with less of the cost. Everything about this feels luxe, it’s a well designed tube that allows application without having to even touch your face. With a thin layer this dried down over the evening but not completely but it doesn’t get tacky just a little wet. It gives a nice plumping affect the next morning & not a speck of dry skin has reared its flaky head. This is even with my routine including my origins spot Treatment that tends to dry spots and the skin around it out.
With autumn winter feeling like it’s just round the corner what will you be changing up in your evening skin care routine? All recommendations are welcome especially serum suggestions.
I’ve had this one for a long time but because it hasn’t been purposed as a use every day cleanser I’ve forgotten to mention it. This the Superdrug Brightening Hot Cloth Cleanser I must have bought 2 or 3 months ago. It’s the first one I’ve used where it’s a thick white balm with a fruity sort of scent to it. I didn’t give this much-loved to begin with and it’s not my favourite but I trust it to do the job. Continue reading “Hot Cloth Cleanser – A Superdrug Brightening Gem…”
