On a good few occasions spent shopping in Barnsley I’ve walked up The Arcade in the city center that has lots of little shops all enclosed under a glass roof. Every time we go past the 8oz Burger Co we say how we love the look of the place. This is the point where we walk on but spend the next 20 minutes discussing what would be our perfect burger. Instead about a week ago we decided to give it a chance, it felt a little strange as it was 2pm on a weekday & we were the only people in.
When we sat down we were quickly greeted by the waiter & as it was early afternoon we both had soft drinks. It has a homely feel to it that’s rustic but kept very clean. In my head it’s what us Brits imagine the quintessential Texan home to look like! They had made great use of wooden palettes to not only be the tables but also the long bench we sat on & fairy lights entwined through them suspended on the ceiling. We’re big Five Guys fans but for me its a chain restaurant you can get in most cities.
The 8oz Burgers
I have been meaning to buy some of those kilner style jars with the handles forever & I need them even more now! But lets get back to the food & the fact that I’m the most boring person for choosing food. There is so much choice in burgers they’ve created such as the Cattle Drive with buffalo mozzarella & shredded beef brisket but if not you can design your own. I went with the classic 8oz beef burger with mozzarella & smoked bacon. All the burgers come in brioche buns which seems to be becoming the thing to do. That being said my biggest pet peeve is the bun becomes soggy. I always find that problem at The Handmade Burger Co whichever burger I have. This however was a juicy burger but it wasn’t swimming in grease so it was just right for me. I did ask if I could have soft bacon which normally crispy & they managed it which I appreciated. The burger was seriously tasty, I may pick simple things but that means what is there has to be good there’s nowhere to hide!
My only downer were the fries, they were peri-peri seasoned but it lacked enough of a spicy hit & they were way too skinny. I love Five Guys Fries Cajun fried theirs are full of flavour & Handmade Burger Co Peri-Peri chips feel like your face may melt (in a good way). These lacked something which would have made it perfect.
This as you can see above is the fame & shame wall which I think my fella is wishing to get his photo up their next time. I think Aftershock is a super spicy burger so I’ll definitely leave that one to the fella to handle! I’d like to go back at night-time to see how the atmosphere is & if they can handle a full house.
If you fancy a gander at the full menu it’s here at the 8oz Burger Co site.
If you live in Barnsley or close by then I’d recommend you give it a chance. While were on it if you have any favourite local restaurants let me know so I can try them out. I’m really wanting to expand on what I eat & be more adventurous!
